The sad reality of local events and recreational activities, but the solution is simple.

Updated: Jul 1

Introduction :

The importance of recreation and activity spaces for families and friends cannot be underestimated. From simple things like going bowling to larger events like concerts and festivals, these spaces play a crucial role in social cohesion and personal well-being, they are opportunities to establish and strengthen social relationships. Sharing experiences with friends, family or coworkers improves the sense of community and belonging. Participating in recreational activities improves physical and mental health. The release of stress, the breaking of monotony, the discovery of new passions, the knowledge that can be acquired and the amount of information that can be transmitted in forums, webinars and conferences, meeting new people and cultures and even the economic boost in a location, etc...

In short, the importance of recreational events and activities in society and cultures around the world is completely clear.

Problem:

However, the inefficiency and difficulty of finding the right place or activity, despite the advantages of the internet and social networks, are a reality.

People often obtain information and learn about an event or activity because of the World of Mouth. A friend, acquaintance, family member or maybe someone random mentioned it and they heard it a few times because they happened to see a poster or an advertisement on the radio or if they are part of groups dedicated to these topics on social networks and this is a big problem because the following reasons:

  • Social media algorithms play a crucial role in delivering information. These algorithms determine what content is shown to users.

  • However, there is a paradox: although algorithms personalize the user experience, they can also limit it. If an algorithm does not consider a topic relevant to a user, it will not show it, even if it is important to that person. A vicious circle is created where the algorithm feeds back on itself.

  • A user consumes a type of content and the algorithm will continue to show this same content to that user in such a way that it will continue to do so consecutively, creating what is known as an echo chamber.

Advertising on social media is often based on user interests and behaviors determined by the platform's algorithm. But what happens when an important local event doesn't fit predefined patterns of interest? The answer is that it is simply ignored and not displayed effectively.

This leads to the need to force advertisements and publicity to levels never seen before in order to bring information to a minimum number of people, causing the saturation of advertisements and promotions overlapping one another. This can make local events even more difficult to see.

Algorithms prioritize what they think is relevant, but this can exclude valuable opportunities.

Many of the advertising methods and ways of disseminating information about local events and activities are radio and groups on social networks, posters and among others, but this is only limited to a certain radius of distance depending on the reach it has in the locality.

Even so, people such as tourists, visitors and people new to the town are not usually involved in local social media groups, or receive the advertising that was previously done in the town, this makes them seem very uninformed and with difficulty of finding events and activities that occur spontaneously in the locality and limits their visibility, activity and success.

In summary, information saturation on networks affects our ability to access relevant events and activities. As a society, we must find a balance between personalization and diversity of options. The limited access to information that we have according to our location due to how the algorithms show and recommend something, means that non-local people lose the ability to find out about these activities that take place in said location. Making this a big dilemma when searching for entertainment, activities and events.

Solution:

Although it seems to be a very complicated problem to solve. We have taken on the task of creating a platform that centralizes the offer of events and activities with multiple multimedia content tools and event and activity visualization maps called FARRIX.
