The Genesis of the Drake and Lamar Feud: A Rap Rivalry Rekindled

In the dynamic world of hip-hop, feuds are not uncommon, but few have captured the attention of the rap community quite like the ongoing spat between Canadian maestro Drake and the lyrical virtuoso Kendrick Lamar.

The roots of this discord can be traced back to the early 2010s, yet it has recently flared up with a series of diss tracks that have set the industry abuzz.

The initial camaraderie between the two artists was evident in their early collaborations, including Drake’s 2011 album Take Care and Lamar’s 2012 masterpiece Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.

However, the seeds of rivalry were sown in 2013 when Lamar dropped his verse on Big Sean’s “Control,” calling out several rappers, including Drake, in what he termed “friendly competition.”

Fast forward to March 2024, and the embers of rivalry have been fanned into flames once again. The premiere of “Like That” by Future, Metro Boomin, and Lamar marked the re-escalation of this feud1. Lamar’s verse on this track was a direct jab at Drake, reigniting a war of words that had simmered down over the years.

Drake’s response came swiftly with tracks like “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle,” the latter of which was removed from social media platforms following legal threats from Tupac Shakur’s estate over the use of AI-generated vocals resembling the late rapper. Lamar retorted with “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA,” to which Drake replied with “Family Matters,” levelling serious accusations against Lamar.

The exchange of diss tracks continued with Lamar’s “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us,” where he accused Drake of heinous acts. Drake’s “The Heart Part 6” was a denial of Lamar’s allegations, claiming misinformation was fed to Lamar’s team.

This feud has not only captivated fans but also drawn commentary from celebrities and media alike, with many considering Lamar to be leading the charge in this lyrical battle1. The discourse surrounding this feud is a testament to the power of words in hip-hop and the intense rivalry that can exist between even the most talented of artists.

As the rap world watches with bated breath, one can only wonder where this feud will lead and what impact it will have on the legacy of these two titans of the industry.
